The nonprofit shifted from partnering with traditional public universities and state archives to building an independent space after facing political hostility, legislative pressure and threats of defunding over LGBTQ+ programming in Alabama. Why Charlotte? Co-Founder Joshua Burford previously taught queer studies at UNC Charlotte making the city an accessible hub with an established local community network. Perfect fit.
